Personality

Around Family/Friends
Grete has little in the way of family that she communicates with, but for friends she is little else but kindly, loyal, and generous with her time. She will not hesitate to lend an ear, dagger, cloak, or even give up a hard-earned meal for someone that has a special place in her heart. Getting to that point may be a bit slow going depending upon the “vibes” she picks up on. Grete also considers children her friends by default – especially the street urchin whose fate is not so different from her own. If she Sees anything in relation to a friend who is aware of her powers, she will gladly give them the information if they want to know it. Those that have her trust but are unaware of her powers are handled differently, out of fear of rejection... or worse.

Around Enemies
If you’ve made an enemy of Grete, one can expect fiery retribution in return if the offense is serious enough. In such a situation, if she did not already foresee your death she will gladly envision and enable it for you. Although vengeful and able to hold a grudge a long time, it takes a lot to push Grete into acting on her malicious desires. On most occasions Grete only fights out of self-defense. Her attitude towards these people can be either as frigid as the Antarctic Ocean or as blazing as the fires of Hell itself.

Usual Mood around strangers:
Grete has a sort of love/hate thing going on when it comes to strangers. On one hand she is insanely wary of them, after what she went through at the monastery and the people she didn’t really know seeking her hand in the caravan. On the other hand she tries to be friendly, as she relies on the potential generosity of strangers in need or want of her services. She tries to look at the world with the innocence of a child, but more often than not her gaze is more like that of a shrewd and wary black market merchant.

Overall, one’s first encounter with Grete may not at first reveal the complex dilemma mentioned above. Instead one is more likely to find her friendly enough and commonly in the center of a throng filled to bursting with music and dance – two of her truest passions aside from her Craft. However, this friendliness tends to remain surface level until she feels the person can be trusted. Until
then, they are kept at arm’s length. As such she may come across as slightly aloof at times, keeping to her own tiny circle of associates. It is not necessarily from a lack of intelligence but rather an overwhelming fear of
betrayal not unlike what her parents had done.

If Grete could have her way she would not show weakness or despair to anyone. She does not like the emotions of negative nature, and prefers to consider herself independent in all things. Asking for help is not in her nature except in circumstances most dire. Grete is an honest person most of the time. This honesty coupled with being unable to tell who is magic or muggle is the reason for her sometimes-quiet nature. There are times, though, when Grete is not so honest, resorting to various trickeries and mischievousness in her Craft and the more mundane.

-History-

Your Story Please?

Grete Landvik was born on a pirate ship to its captain, Alvis, and his swashbuckling wife, Alfhild. Neither of Grete’s parents had magical gifts, but at a very young age it became startlingly clear that the little girl was not like any other child. Most of these incidents cropped up in the form of visions told to the wrong person, though occasionally other unexplainable happenings occurred while out at sea. One of these was when she sought to escape punishment, and had somehow found herself up in the crow’s nest. It became clear to the crew that the pirate princess was, in fact, a budding witch.

Alvis’s crew threatened mutiny if something wasn’t done about the girl’s powers. Alvis tried to convince himself that a pirate ship was no place for a little girl. At the tender age of five, Grete’s parents made port in England and sought out a cleric in order to have what spell or demon that was inside of their daughter expelled. When several attempts by the priests proved useless, Alvis and Alfhild left Grete at the monastery for continued “treatment”. Grete was sent to the section of the monastery that served as a sort of asylum while various attempts to rid her of her visions and magic continued. Her parents went back out to sea. All that Grete was left with regarding her parents was a small bound book in which both parents had written letters of farewell to her, revealing slivers of who they were.

For years Grete refused to believe the visions and such were a figment of her imagination. All of the attempts made by monks within the monastery proved futile. Still certain that she was getting her information from Satan, the clerics resorted to beating her next. When even that didn’t work, they officially left her at the mercy of the other lunatics they cared for. Grete made a few friends, and with their help had gathered enough ingredients to mix potions and poultices. A spectral wizard informed her how to prepare and dispense them. When the clergy caught word and sight of this, they became certain that she was a witch and sentenced her to death upon the dawn of the next morning. Grete was fourteen.

That night she left instructions for the remedies with a trusted friend, and in return they helped her escape the monastery. Before Grete left, one of her friends also gave her a simple amulet and prayers for luck. Monks and guards alike chased after her through the woods. It took ages to lose them. Grete had very little knowledge of the geography in which she’d found herself, and as a
result she meandered aimlessly through the night. Exhausted and starving, Grete tentatively approached a caravan campsite and collapsed mere feet away from one of the tents.

The next morning found Grete in a bedroll with her eyes staring at the cloth ceiling of a tent. Startled, she awoke and looked all around. What she found amazed her: the caravan had taken her in, nursed the wounds she’d acquired in her gambit to escape, and even had some hot food ready and waiting for her. After observing the group for a while Grete decided that these people were non magical folk and, as a general rule, vowed that they would never learn that she was magical. Of everything a fourteen-year-old girl could want, Grete sincerely wanted a group of people she could call her family. The book her parents left her did little to alleviate the loneliness in her heart. Whenever she could utilize her Gift for the good of the caravan, Grete did, but made certain it was so discrete as to be unnoticeably mundane. Most times she said it was a dream she had had, since the interpretation of such night-wanderings seemed common enough.

Her elaborate ruses did not fool the caravan leader’s grandmother, who had originally owned the caravan with her husband. Eventually the old woman confronted Grete, and in fear the witch thought for sure she would have to flee lest they decide to burn her at the stake. To her surprise Grete learned that the grandmother was also a witch with some gift of Sight. Grete came to refer to the old woman as her own Grandmother, for the kindly witch taught Grete more about her magic and helped her gain influence and a modest amount of wealth within the caravan.

Her good fortune wasn’t meant to last. Prosperous though her career in the caravan had become, it also attracted the eye of eligible bachelors amongst the troupe of traders. One of these young men, drunken after a day of successful trading, tried to take advantage of Grete. In her fear of the man’s increasingly violent insistence, she used magic to kill him and get away unharmed. Incidents continued to follow a similar pattern. The third man to try such a thing was set aflame, and this time there was a witness... the caravan leader, himself.

Despite the Grandmother’s pleas for leniency, the leader of the caravan insisted that Grete must part company with the caravan. Her exile was not meant to be a penniless one, despite the murders she had committed. They gave her a wagon, horse, minimal supplies, and let her keep most of her earnings. At the age of 17 she once again struck out on her own into the great wide world. However, the vengeful side of her felt the punishment much too harsh considering what the men had been after... and thus she cast a curse on the entire caravan, minus her sole defender. No one is certain what has become of this caravan or the old woman since.

From that day forward, Grete has travelled the land as a combination of a fortune teller and minstrel. Her favorite and most frequent stop is in the little magical village known as Hogsmeade. This new school being built not far away has Grete looking up at the modest castle with both awe and curiosity.
